the freeware i'm using is iWisoft Free Video Converter which can convert mkv to avi with good quality and 100% free.

if its a player cccp is the best there is to play any format http://www.cccp-project.net if its to convert files i use psp video 9, it was made for the psp but it converts anything into mp4 for free whether you have one or not. you can check if theres a mkv to avi option =/ but theres definitely a mkv to mp4. i used to convert files from veoh back when it was good -__-

but i think you still need to install a video codec in order to play it to media classic? :D cause some files cant be normally read by the classic player.
What i recommend is to get a version of Total Video Converter. Doesnt change the quality of the picture and wide range of converting option you can choose from :D
