RE: heRO going private hosting - GM-Pandora - 01-22-2008

Actually thor is kinda old nowadays Sweat Nameless Island & Abbey Dungeon are the newest, and well satan morroc I guess but I don't think that's on eAthena yet.

Will do about the hardware check & connection check, actually might install on another computer regardless of the option we decide to go with. I have a computer I'm not using and it's slightly better and more recent than the server. Not sure it will change much, RO server is not very demanding in terms of hardware, it's mostly memory + internet connection that matters.

Cool, lack of unsightly lag attracts even more people as word of mouth goes along.

What are the total memory of each of those two server computers?

(I may donate Icon_suprised)

Hmmm will we also be getting Nameless Abbey, I thought it came after thor's...woops mixing up the updates :3

Well Satan Morroc I think is out on eAthena, but other servers I've been on with it aren't fully stable, at least the ones my BF has me playing on every now and then.

The 1 computer hosting the server now has 1 gb of ram. But I got 4 computers at home, 2 of which I don't actually use, the one I would maybe use for the server has 512 mb of ram, and if planning to go through with the plan to use it for the server I would buy an extra 1 gb, bringing it to 1.5gb of ram total.

Nameless and Abbey are a little while away for us, got other stuff to add first and it will need more work for the GM team / test team, cuz thor is currently pretty much ready, but Nameless/Abbey are not in our current svn version.

At first glance we need more memory first and foremost, its using the full 1 gig of ram almost all the time. So I'll get more ram first, then we'll see if we actually need to go private hosting or if we can manage with the home connection a bit longer and save up for the future.

The processor usage varied a lot, but never went above 40% in the 2 minutes that I watched it last night, so I think we're fine in that department. The network usage on the server computer also fluctuated lots but didn't go above 70%.

As for the bandwidth usage I was not able to check. Apparently I need some sort of code number that my provider gave me eons ago and that I never used. This number is different from my login. It's possible to retrieve it on their website and they send it to you via your email with the provider, which I never used >.< so I'll try to call them soon I guess.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned Pandy (haven't read all the replies), but you have to be careful with collocating. A good portion of data centers require a rack machine in order to host it. I'm not sure of your current machine's setup, but if you've got a standard ATX tower it might be an extra charge.

I've collocated servers before and it's a great deal as long as the company doesn't impose restrictions on you.

In reality, $100/mo is probably fine, although I'm almost 100% sure you can find something much cheaper. I'm not informed of your bandwidth usage, but I know there are companies out there offering 100mbit (burstable to 1gbit) metered lines on a Xeon CPU with more than adequate memory for as little as $80 - $90/mo. Sure, it's a $10 difference, but it's still an option if you're unable to collocate.

Thanks Peek, wasn't sure there was a Best Buy in my area, but looks like yes and they got it in stock ha!

Staples has some too.

Spoiled with choices lol now I have to go get it..

@Crow yeah I'm aware there are cheaper deals out there, but I wanna be sure of what I get.

As for the price, I was checking the one for tower, which turns out to be 119$ (the server doesn't fit in the "mini-tower" size, bummer).
