I seen there some avatars with white background, i would be cooler with transparent background.
You need two things:
1. Paint - program
2. Internet
You should have these Ok

Take somekind picture, BMP or PNG is the best choise.
Then you know what picture you want to make transparent, go in this site
http://redux.imagemagick.org/MagickStudio/scripts/MagickStudio.cgi
There you see Filename:.
Put your picture "source" (exsample: "C:/MyOwnPictures/picture1.BMP") on other and then press Wiew button.

Under the picture you see: Pain Protorpies.
Make it look like this:

FUZZ _ METHOD _ PAINT TYPE
5999 _ Replace _ Matte
------------------------------------
Then move mouse on your picture, you see somekind target cross: -|-
Target it on that white background, (bg color can be purple if you wan to, but make sure its 1colored) then press Output button.
Then choose format: gif and press Output button again.
Then you see ready picture, now right click it and dl on your computer.

An alternate method would be uhh...
Making the avatar on photoshop, the canvas transparent then saving as a .png or .gif.

@Okayaki Some people dont have photoshop
