like your sig ellie?
hmm sounds like a funny anime, should remember to look for it...
but the comment this anime>evangelion, is it filled to the brim with philosophical and psychological discourses?
otherwise i would say that evangelion is still > most mecha animes...
personally i don't like mecha all that much, but i can bear to watch them if they're funny enough (such as FMP)...

RE: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
filled to the brim with philosophy doesnt make a mecha show over the top
TTGL is a super robo show, its key words are hot blood, over the top, action packed, funny, and... bouncy
Like how Real robo shows should be angsty, a bit realistic, talk about the brutality of war. etc.
Or Hybrid robo shows normally have tons of philosophy, reference to religious and myths, etc
There are many exception, but that's the basic idea
TTGL is one of the greatest shows among super robo shows, since it archived all a super robo show needed
Eva is one of the greatest among its peers, which are hybrid robo shows (personally I like Fafner much more than it, but not many people like that show and some keep citing its just another Eva clone)
Since its 2 different types, saying one is better than another should be purely one's opinion. Watches for yourself and decided which kind you like more

RE: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Since you brought up the subclasses
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Big O is another Hybrid Robot show as well as RahXephon
while mecha anime like the recent Godannar, Tengen Toppen, and classic 80s mecha such as Getter Robo, Mazinger, GrenDizer (all by Go Nagai) are super robot shows -Super robot has only recently seen a new revival, possibly due to the gradual dumbening down of humor?
and err realistic robot anime? well no trouble there, Gundam, Macross, Robotech (ugh) probably land in that category (land, get it? cause valkyries are like jet planes? nevermind >.>)
oh btw, if you are a guy and all you care about is raw muscle and bouncy-ness; watch Godannar, it takes the genre way over the top! Almost like a parody. Just don't catch insania virus from watching it.

RE: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Godanna lack the epic feel of some super though.
Its still one of the finer shows
Funny note Go-danna = Go, husband (which can both mean Go! Husband or Go-the husband); God-anna = err, God-Anna X3
About the real category, beside much discussed Macross 7 with the power of singing a bit unrealistic, Macross in general is a solid Real robot show , why the hesitation?

RE: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
EVA is used like real, has an angsty pilot
However its origin and various display of super natural power its like a super robot
thus the robot could be considered hybrid
The show itself fit the hybrid mold (well, since its one of the defining shows of that sub genre LOL)
But that's enough with our off topic, no?
