Moderation Styles
Basically the question is which moderator style/technique do you think works the best under the majority of circumstances.

So throughout the history of pretty much anything there have been moderators, and each moderator brings to the table their own style of how to moderate the masses. However each style can be grouped into two main categories.

Intervention

In intervention the moderator may see an issue coming, but they choose to do nothing until it becomes a direct clear cut violation. Only after a clear violation has occurred does the moderator act using anyone of their moderation techniques, such as a direct warning, harsh threat, or punishment.

Anticipation

In this moderator style the moderator sees a issue arising, or simply has a bad feeling about something so they act before any clear cut violations occur. The point is to try and stop the problem before it occurs using more subtle techniques such as changing to topic, slight hints towards punishment, and so on.

RE: Moderation Styles
That would depend on the situation, methinks.
I can think of places that both would be appropriate, and to hold one over the other is iffy.

RE: Moderation Styles
Anticipation can not be used except by GM's. Because Mods do not have the authority nor should have the authority to take action when no Rule has actually been broken. Not to mention that to Anticipate you got to use your own opinion whether situations are deteriorating or heading towards a unsatisfactory conclusion. Which can cause more problems then they solve when your opinions is greatly different from everyone else at the time.

Leave Anticipatory Moding to the GM's

Don't think you understood correctly, Fates. D= He didn't mean issuing punishment before the rule's been broken, he just meant trying to stop the rule from being broken in the first place, calming everyone down and changing the subject and such. I voted Anticipation, but when it's not possible, intervention is also fine.

RE: Moderation Styles
I voted Anticipation, but balance is good.

Having filled GM, Moderator, and Admin positions in other areas of the net, I can say that my style generally leans toward the Anticipation option, and, as far as I can tell, generally kept things running smoothly as well.

S'all about respect, imo. Be a friend to the players, be open, but also let it be known that you can and will use your powers if and when the need arises. Hopefully people enjoy your friendly side more than your wrathful one and steer clear of trouble.

My opinion is a moderator should always remain neutral, not like you do JJJ, so imo you are not qualified.

And returning to the topic, there are times when intervention is better and others where anticipation is more suitable. It all depends on the situation.

RE: Moderation Styles
I know what he meant, but as I've never actually seen JJJ use more subtle techniques such as changing to topic, slight hints towards punishment, and so on. And the others tend to use Intervention I thought my point was valid.

RE: Moderation Styles
I'm an anticipation mod, I play off of topics to basically avoid trouble, I hate filing @mute reports may be a huge reason why I chose this method though.

Quick Edit: Though if I do see a huge troublemaker on main I'll act very fast to @mute them.
