I'm afraid I do no know how to contrast yet...

Basically, that picture started off as a circle, and I built onto it with the basic features of the picture next to it. Then, after a bit of figuring out how to even color the forsaken thing, (Painting in illustrator is...difficult, compared to what it should be, yet a very nice tool.) I filled it in, and made the point size of the lines larger, to make it look better.

I may take it into photoshop now and toy around with it a bit though...

Try to find a basic book about drawing in general, it should talk about lighting/shading in its chapters to give you an idea of what it is.
