FF werent the first to show humans riding bird creatures, there was some in Nausicaa (an anime movie + manga) which is almost a decade older than FF ^_^

Kai and Kui are birds that Master Yupa rides, he's the old swordman who helps nausicaa. She is never seen riding them in the movie, only in the manga. But her friend Asbel is riding it in the end generic.

Ayu: you better go watch it, I watched the ENTIRE kanon serie, do me a favor and watch one of my favorite movie: Nausicaa and the valley of the wind ^_^
