Guide - Upgrading

Guide - Upgrading

The upgrading system allows you to upgrade the ability of your current weapon (more Atk) or armor (more Def). Every player's dream is to have the best equipment possible for their character. For this, you'll need perseverance and alot of luck.

Most people go to Prontera's upgrade shop since it's the easiest one to access. To visit the upgrade shop in Prontera, enter the building south-east from the center (red dot).

There is also an upgrade shop in Morroc, Payon, Alberta and Yuno. Inside Prontera's upgrade shop, you'll find 4 NPCs. I'll explain what each of them can do for you.

Vurewell sells Phracon (200z) and Emveretarcon (1000z). These metals are used to upgrade level 1 and level 2 weapons.

Dietrich can refine metals for you. Oridecon is used to refine level 3 and level 4 weapons. Elunium is used to refine armor. You cannot buy Oridecon and Elunium from an NPC, you must buy it from other players or find it yourself. Oridecon and Elunium can be found in pure form or rough form (Rough Oridecon and Rough Elunium). Dietrich will exchange you 1 Elunium if you give him 5 Rough Elunium, and 1 Oridecon if you give him 5 Rough Oridecon.

Grendal can fix broken equipment for you. He will charge 1 Steel and 5000z, regardless of your equipment. There are situations where you can have your weapon\armor break (from Meltdown for example). Once broken, your equipment will become unusable and have its name in red. You need to fix it to be able to use it again.

Weapon Repair
Blacksmiths and Whitesmiths can also repair broken equipment with the skill Weapon Repair. They do not need to equip it, they can repair anything. You don't need money, an Iron Hammer or an anvil to use this skill but you do need the right metal.
Weapon lvl 1 - Iron Ore
Weapon lvl 2 - Iron
Weapon lvl 3 - Steel
Weapon lvl 4 - Rough Oridecon
Armor - Steel
It's always better to have a BS\WS you trust to repair for you.

Hollengrhen is the main man, he can upgrade equipment for you. You need to have the item equipped, have the right metal and need to pay an upgrade fee.
Here is what you will need.

You can only upgrade equipment that your character can wear.
You cannot upgrade headgear that is worn on Mid or Lower such as Fin Helm and Iron Cain, or accessories.
You can upgrade equips to a maximum of +10.

Once an item is refined to its maximum safety level, there is a risk you need to take if you want to over-upgrade it. If you attempt to upgrade it past its maximum safety level, the item could be lost forever! If the confirmed item is to be upgraded past the safe limit, then you will be given a warning and a chance to quit without any cost.

If you succeed in upgrading, a 'SUCCESS' message will display and the item will have a +1 added to it. If the upgrade fails, a 'FAILURE' message will display and the item, Zeny used and any cards in the slots of the item will all be destroyed completely, so please be aware.

No stats or anything else other than Weaponry Research will affect your success chances. All upgrading NPCs are equal and not one of them gives you better results, but people might prefer to upgrade in a certain town because they're superstitious.

I suggest not to over-upgrade an item that you want to wear without having a backup replacement. For example, I wouldn't try to +6 a Helm if I didn't have an extra +5 Helm to wear.

Weaponry Research
Blacksmiths/Whitesmiths have a skill called Weaponry Research which increases their upgrading success rate by 1% per level (max level 10). The extra 10% success rate comes in handy, but can only work on equipment this character can wear. Always try to use a BS\WS for overupgrading equipment they can wear.

Upgrading success
Maximum safety levels (All upgrades up to these levels will succeed):
Weapon lvl 1, +7
Weapon lvl 2, +6
Weapon lvl 3, +5
Weapon lvl 4, +4
Armor, +4

Add +10% success to all attempts if you are using level 10 Weaponry Research.
Upgrading weapons
An overupgraded weapon will have a hidden ATK bonus that is not displayed on your ATK stat. For example, a hit with a +8 Lance (lvl 3, 185 atk), my ATK would be 185+40+(a random number between 1 and 24).

+8 | 5.6 | 20%
+9 | 6.3 | 20%
+10 | 7.0 | 10%

Weapon Refine
Weapon Refine is a skill that only Whitesmiths have. It allows you to upgrade weapons without an NPC and with a bonus success rate. It works similarly to Weapon Repair. You don't need money, a hammer or an anvil to use this skill but you do need the right metal.
Weapon lvl 1 - Iron Ore
Weapon lvl 2 - Iron
Weapon lvl 3 - Steel
Weapon lvl 4 - Rough Oridecon

Only the job level of the Whitesmith affects the bonus success.
Job level 40: -5%
Job level 50: +0%
Job level 60: +5%
Job level 70: +10%

Every level of the skill lets you upgrade up to a certain level (at level 10, you can upgrade up to +10). The Weaponry Research skill does not apply. You can upgrade any weapon (Katars, Spears, Bows..). You cannot upgrade armor. Don't upgrade if your job level is under 50 (negative success rate). It's great to overupgrade any weapon and have a 10% (job level 70) bonus success rate. Remember to only have a Whitesmith you trust upgrade for you.
