RE: Ventrillo?
Ventrillo, eh?
This topic has come up a number of times before and in general there's always been a consensus between Ryu and myself about it, but for laziness on my part.??However, if there's support on the server let me run something by everyone:??Ventrilo is dead simple to set up if you have the static IP, and runs on almost nothing.??Multiple servers take up almost zero bandwidth.??New servers can be created in about 2 minutes.??If you have the static IP and separate server.
I've got the static IP and dedicated line with around 1 Mb upload and no bandwidth limit.??What I also have is a rather large internet bill for a business-class connection that isn't going to pay itself (think: it's probably not as bad as Panda's bandwidth bill, but it's close).
So here's what we're proposing:
- We'll create a HeRO Vent server and populate it with a few channels, if enough people feel they want it.
- I'm going to finally get busy and throw a paypal donation box up on the site (my site, not this one).
- Donate if you feel the need.
- Vent it up.
Now, the second part:
- Making separate channels/servers is also dead simple.
- If you want a separate, password-protected channel, just donate and send me an e-mail (it'll all be on the website) and we can hook you up.??Doesn't have to be a lot, either.
- If you want a separate, admin-enabled entire server, just donate somewhat more and send me an e-mail.??If you want a different vent version, we can handle that, too.??Just keep in mind the version we run (2.1.3, IIRC) supports 8+ people.??Newer versions don't, but not like I don't have them on the computer somewhere.
- If you want a different program..... we can think about it.??Benefit to vent is that I can make it work without too much effort.??Mumble was tried at one point, but it suddenly decided that sound wasn't necessary, and I lost interest fast.
So if there's interest, we can probably set something up.??It definitely works, as we've been running multiple servers for years now.??And provided this new psu doesn't kick the bucket before I can rebuild the whole network or move, it'll be fine.??Just bear with as we do some shuffling, though.??It'll require moving some servers around and doing a bit of housecleaning on the webserver, and remembering this time to set the router up properly to forward the right port range to vent.??So setting it up could take a few days, if Real Life gets in the way...
But it's not like we can't do it.
