If I recall correctly from astronomy, when our type of star "dies" it will grow to about the size of a red giant and it's circumfrence would surpass Earth's orbit. I don't think anything on our planet, or even our planet itself, will survive that one.

Thats nice.??But that is in 5 billion years.??There is one parameter that is not taken into consideration.??Technology.??Wouldn't surprise me that whatever form of life dominates the earth in 5 billion years, it will be able to modify the orbit of the earth.??And even within just 100 years, I think we would be able.??Like making a chain reaction, sending nukes on some giant asteroid to make it crash on earth or just pass near by the earth to modify its trajectory.??

5 billion years???Or 3 years???We're talking about ridiculous superstitions predicated on an ancient calendar ending on a certain date, I wasn't aware scientifically-backed chronologies were going to come into play.??

Edit: If, in 5 billion years or whenever, we have the technology to modify an entire planet's orbit in a way that is not so destabilizing that we eliminate the Earth's ability to support life, we could probably just have moved to another planet and simulated the sun's effects entirely xD

Okay, seriously though, here's what will happen in 2012:

Walt Disney will unfreeze and Hitler will come out of hiding.??They will duel DBZ style in the middle of an expansive wasteland.??Good ol' Walt will discover that he is actually a Super Saiyan and he will grow some extra hair simply so it can turn golden and spiky.??Hitler will then begin rapidly consuming human beings to increase his "power level" to OVER 9000! while Walt Disney stupidly stands there looking like he's constipated.??

When they finally get around to fighting, they will fly at each other and the force of their collision will cause a shockwave so powerful it will destroy the Earth.??Luckily, for no apparent reason, both of these men can somehow survive the vacuum of space (wait, why is that lucky???we're all dead).??The battle will rage on for centuries until a space ship arrives where Earth used to be looking for their humpback whale pen pals from eons ago, jealous and angry that they stopped writing.

At this point, the moderately genitalia-shaped space ship will attempt to stop the petty fighting that is still going on between the geriatric old men.??Walt will confess his love and Hitler will spurn him and hop in the space ship and discuss his TOTALLY RELEVANT love of yaoi mangas.??Walt's rage is so powerful that, after being spurned, he will explode - taking a better part of the universe along with him.??

Yeah, Earth's axis shifts a degree in either direction, and the planet will no longer be able to hold life. It will either be too hot or too cold and we all die.

I personally think 2012 is just another y2k like nonsense. And if the world does end? Who Cares?!? We're all dead!!!
