A lot of players ask this question, so I'll answer what could contribute to being a GM, but this is not a sure-thing kinda list. A lot of people want to be GM and we are honestly
very picky.
Current "GM hiring status": We may be hiring.
(Even if it says we are not currently hiring GMs, you can always send in your application, and we'll keep it until we need new GMs.)
GMs often take on multiple status for the below:
Roleplay GM : In addition to regular GM tasks, this GM is in charge of encouraging roleplay on the server, mainly with events and storyline. This GM is in charge of making the storyline of the server progress (general ideas must be submitted for approval however). Players applying for this specific role must have a certain experience of roleplaying (be it online or tabletop), mention your experience at the end of your application. It is also mandatory that the applicant has participated in at least 1 ToH in the past 6 months.
Player Relation GM: In addition to regular GM tasks, this GM will focus on reports that come from one player and relate to another player, such as KS reports, complaints of insults/disrespect, etc. This spot requires mediating skills, maturity and a good deal of patience.
Support GM: In addition to regular GM tasks, this GM is in charge of the Support Ticket system, of answering as much tickets as is possible for them and then of dispatching the others amongst the GM team. They must also do the followup on all tickets to ensure they are resolved in a timely manner.
All-Around-GM: Doing moderation, support, bot check, dual-client check, hosting some events, answering player's questions in game and in forums, etc. Someone who wants to do a little of everything. Dedication and availability is a must for people who apply for this spot.
Event GM: Self-explanatory, hosts many events for players' delight.
Scripter: Someone who can script RO NPC and also test/fix scripts from other GMs. Having a test server is a plus, mention it. An example of scripts you've made in the past helps too.
Spriter / Mapper: Someone who can make graphical sprites or Maps for the server, ideally someone who can handle .act file and Browedit.
Promoter GM: This GM is in charge of promoting heRO. This includes RMS and Reddit advertising (such as answering to Server Seeking posts). They also post and contribute to HeRO's social media (Facebook and Twitter groups).
Wiki Manager: This GM takes care of the HeRO wiki, adding some content themselves and double-checking the content added by players, etc.
Test & Dev Manager: This GM handles the test & dev section application, and cleans up the user list from time to time, keeps the "to test" content up to date, as well as files and tool needed for players to contribute.
Tech GM: We are always looking for experienced technical GM to help mostly outside of game. Someone who has already hosted a server (be it a test server or real one) and who is comfortable with Unix/SQL, the hercules repo and etc.
Other GM task may include (depending on each GM's expertise) but are not limited to: helping to test scripts, spriting, mapping, making suggestions & giving opinions regarding server related issues, etc.
-
Minimum requirement to apply:
- Play on heRO! We don't accept applications from people who have not yet joined the server! Furthermore, we usually recruit our players from our veteran players that we know well and can trust. At least 3 months is mandatory.
- Be active on our heRO discord
- Send in your application with the template correctly filled (see below).
- Be part of the Test&Dev section for over 2 months. To join the T&D see here.
- If applying for the Roleplay manager position, you must have participated in at least 1 ToH in the past 6 months, indicate the date(s).
Other things that could contribute to being chosen as a GM:
- Be a model player (follow the rules and encourage others to do so). GMs have to try to set a good example for players.
- Be helpful toward others (both GMs and players).
- Be active! If you don't have time to play, how will you have time to GM? This includes being active in game and on forums.
- English! We welcome applicants who can speak more than one language, to support our very varied community, however good written English is a must, with proper spelling and punctuation.
- Check your spelling, no one wants an illiterate GM.
- Don't bother current GMs to know the identity of their legit characters.
- Don't insist/harass GMs to become one, this is a sure way to NOT become a GM.
- Be humble and selfless, this is not a "power" position to rule others, GMs are there to help the players.
- Be ready to receive discord DMs and read support tickets with whine, rants, suggestions, lots of questions and other comments, some of that could be tedious sometimes but it's part of being a GM.
- Be ready to start low level GM and have commands and privilege come with time (Internship period first).
- Make sure you have time to be a GM before sending your application. It's rather demanding time-wise and GMs who are inactive will be removed after some time. Being an active GM can leave you with little time to play your legitimate character, so make sure you consider it carefully.
- Patience is definitely a must!
- Contribute on the heRO Wiki
- Being a helpful part of the "Test & Dev" section can also greatly contribute to being chosen. Just joining the section isn't enough, you have to do some work. If you don't do it as a player, how can we trust that you will do it as a GM?
GM/Mod Application Template:
Copy and paste this template and fill it with your answers (remove the stuff in parentheses), you are welcome to add more for GM, for mods you can write N/A for questions that do not apply. Once complete and you're sure it's ready for review send it to a GM via PM in forum and on discord.
We will confirm receipt of your pm, from then on all you have to do is be patient and continue the things mentioned above that contribute to being a GM/mod. All applications are kept until we decide it's time to choose a new game master or moderator, they are then reviewed, a few candidates are selected and discussed among-st the active GM until we come to a decision. We will contact you *if* we need follow-up information or if you are chosen, otherwise you will not hear from us. You may renew your interest in GMing/moding if your application was sent over 6 months ago or if some information from your old template has changed and you want to update it, however do this moderately.
For GM applicants, selected candidates become Intern (level 20) before being full-fledge GMs, with limited powers in game, a forum account and a GM account on the test server to practice their commands. If things go well they are afterwards added as GM (level 40).
- Name: (first name only will do if you don't want to give your full name)
Age:
Main character(s) name, class and level: (Usually most people have 1, but if you consider more than one character your main feel free to include all.) *This is mandatory, if you don't play heRO, don't bother to apply!*
Other characters: (You don't have to list all your characters, but the more you put, the more chances you have that the GM teams notices one of your characters)
How long have you played RO?
How long have you played HeRO? (If you have played under 4 months wait before turning in your application.)
Servers you have played on and how long:
What languages do you know? (Include your expertise in each language you list, this is spoken and written language, not programming ones)
What country, city and time zone are you from?
What do you think GMing/modding is about/entails?

This list is a guide only.

Programming experience if applying for Scripter.
Roleplay experience if applying for Roleplay manager.
Anything else you want to include.
We are always searching for Moderators! If you want to apply, fill the above form by replacing every "GM" with "Moderator" and answer to all the questions. Being part of the test & dev is not mandatory for Mods, if a question does not apply to moderator just put N/A as answer. Send your applications to GM-Rahice via PM.
I will review each application with the other GMs. I reserve myself the final word, but will be listening to their advice. I also reserve the right to de-GM any GM who would not be doing a good job, or who would be inactive.
Peace,
Pandora ^_^
