DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. A ddos attack is an attack that uses up all of the target's resources, to the point the target can't do anything.

As an example, imagine yourself talking to someone. Pretty easy. Now think of yourself surrounded by 50+ people who are all talking to u at the same time asking different questions, explaining things, etc. There will be a point where your brain can't handle all the information since everything is coming in at once. Your brain would be experiencing a ddos attack.
