Once you can purchase and consume alcohol legally at 21, the jersey gets handed down to someone who cannot. For kids, they're great. My son got a Brett Favre Packers jersey for Christmas one year, put it on that day and pried it off around New Year's Eve.

5th of all: Wearing jerseys are a way of showing respect/cheering on the player, say you are a player that just finished your rookie year last season and now you're on the field. Suddenly, you see people with your number on it, cheering you on. It motivates you, stop hating.

7th of all: If nobody bought those jerseys, the NFL teams wouldn't be able to afford many of the high-paid players such as the Patriots (who I hate now that they cost me $5 to my dad for the SB, stupid Brady) wouldn't be able to afford Tom Brady, Randy Moss, others, and now Joey Galloway and Fred Taylor.
