I used to play MTG for a few years, though my friends and I did things a little different. We generally played "No Rares" games, since we always had this unequal distribution in term of rare card colors and/or usefulness, and often, it wasn't really fun when only one or two of us could utilize rares and the rest couldn't. It actually made for some interesting games and decks when nobody was allowed to base their strategy upon powerful rares.
I personally used a Blue/Red deck that offered indirect attacks and flyers with draw power and a bit of other utility. Quicksilver Dagger was one of my favorite cards, allowing me to snipe my opponents and draw through my deck faster.
