It may sound weird that this is even a thing for a RO server, but for a server as old as we are, reaching 20 years old, it is not only the server-side infrastructure that's severely aging and in need of update. The supporting websites, including this wiki, are also very old and are in dire need of some major updates. Aventurine and Flutrane have been brought on as GMs in recent years not only to help with doing some major client and server updates, but also to help out with the supportive websites as well. For example, we have our own heRO database to serve the same function as RMS since there are so many custom monsters and items in a pre-renewal setting. All credit for this is on them, alongside TD members, for creating, updating, and hosting it.
Recently, we migrated our decade-old ticket system to use Discord tickets. This is the first of many steps to spend some time upgrading our support infrastructure. We had a basic website update last year as well, but there's still a lot that can be done. But there are still the forum, the control panel, and this wiki itself. Many players have reported problems accessing the wiki. We tried to work with our host, and the conclusion is that the version of Mediawiki we are using is far too old to implement the necessary fixes, and upgrading to a new version is not possible due to other technical limitations of our current website/setup. If we need to upgrade one thing, we need to upgrade the ENTIRE thing at once, or consider switching to some other platform. All of this is going to be really taxing on resources and time. We will still aim to handle all WoE and one instance that's originally scheduled for January (now delayed to late February), along with some smaller-scale updates. After that, we may spend some time on these infrastructure projects instead.
Goodbye to heRO Forum
The forum format is mostly unused and is a product of its time. The forum was kept alive because it was required for RMS listing. However, RMS has updated its rule to allow Discord to replace forums as a replacement. With no traffic on the forum, its only purpose was to post news for the patcher to display, and that is it. The forum has been with us for 20 years. Although it has multiple updates over the past 2 decades, there is a limit to how we can keep the old data up to date in new data formats and software versions. For these reasons, we don't think that it is worth the effort, resource and financial cost to keep the forum up anymore. However, we recognize that we have players who grew up on the forums, and there are many precious memories there over the past 20 years.
We will give players time to search and review the forums to save and record these highly sentimental posts and historical records. The forum will be up for a few months, but after that, it may be slowly dismantled at any time (whenever we can decide on a technologically and financially viable upgrade path for these related issues) within 2026. Goodbye, heRO forums. It has been a precious 20 years serving the thousands of players who have utilized its service. We will miss you!
