It had some decent fighting scenes. Not enough to warrant being labelled a war movie, but it had a good amount of action. Action =/= Guns & Killing all the time.

I really liked the protagonist he was EXTREMELY realistic. Many movies/animes/books/etc. I might otherwise enjoy, have very unrealistic situations or characters... but in District 9, it was really realistic. His initial reaction, his middle reaction, his being a ____ to Christopher, and even the end where he finally decided it was alright. It was very psychologically accurate imo. (Not that I'm a psychologist or anything).
That had to be the most enjoyable part for me. A REALISTIC person put in a crazy situation, and his reactions.

Though i must admit that the critics were spot on about how black-and-white some of the other characters are (i.e. the badass merc, the south-african mob)...
