Followup on this. The GMs have discussed it and come to a decision.
We've decided to add a low chance status to the highest fishes. This is consistant with the world of RO (such as potato stun and ice cream freeze) and seems a better solution than raising the weight which would only punish the low-str characters. I've ran some test and it seems this chance to status is unaffected by stats or cards.
This change is going to come with the June patch.

The status will come with a low chance, its a minor setback to compensate for the fact that fish are pretty easy to get ^_^
And it will only affect the highest fish (salmon and up).
Don't call other players idiots, everyone is entitled to their opinion

Can't you let the status effects kick in on maps with PVP/GVG is enabled? Seriously I don't want to lose % by using an item that is supposed to keep me alive and ends up getting me killed.. That's just annoying and stupid.

I think what he means is that we should enjoy them since they are not actually meant to be there in the first place, they are already a bonus given to players to make their life easier. We're not removing them, we are only adding a small chance to status, like potato and ice cream do.
You'll notice most item in RO when giving a nice bonus, also have a downside. Like Deviling card (Add 50% more tolerance against Neutral Property Attack. Receive 50% more damage from other Property Attack.) or Ghostring card (Enchant an Armor with the Ghost property. Reduce HP Recovery by 25%.) for example.
