AnimE.. And no they didnt. 4Kids did that. Don't blame the things 4kids did on the rest of them. ADV has a lot of wonderful licenses and so does Bandai.

Anime being the shortened katana for animation.
More than one animation is animations. ;D

*also indicates maths. Mathsmathsmaths* =P

Doesn't matter. A lot of -what is known- is adapted for kids. Any of the lesser known ones will always have problems, due to lack of interest.
Most people who watch the less kiddy-ones usually prefer to watch it a a sub, anyway.
Why?
Because they are usually downgraded once dubbed.
A lot of Westerns still hold the belief that animated = cartoon = kids, and it reflect in changed story lines, and even in the vioce actors that are used.

You're speaking in bias. Eastern canada did not have non-mainstream anime until very recently. It was Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing and a few other things. Anime is noy corrupted by those other companies, you're speaking of the anime you watch on TV.

Speaking as a completely unbiased individual who hates and loves subs and dubs both, Anime is not for kids, but the ones 4kids created are. Naruto, Dragon BallZ, One Piece, Bleach etc. They are all 4kids' fault. ADV does not dumb things down and censor it if it isn't already censored. All of the censorship is 4kids.

RE: Dubs vs Subs

I'm not speaking via what I see on TV.
Why? Because there -rarely- is any on TV here. Last one I remember on was 2 years or so ago. Ghost In The Shell. At 3am.

I'm speaking via what I see in stores. Not the main ones, but ones that 1) specialise in such general things, and 2) Ones that import a whole load of everything.

Never said anime is for kids. I said a lot of Westerners hold that opinion.
Like I said. The most known ones being for, or dumbed down for kids. You listed them yourself. How many people do you think would have heard of Naruto, Sailor Moon or DBZ compared to say... Elfin Lied, which is probably one of the best known of its... kind.

Western Television and the way it ads Anime panders heavily like its a niche or immature medium.

Take for instance the Scifi channel and its Ani-Monday schedule. Nothing inherently wrong with the programming, buts it the way they advert the shows with their shameless fandubbing of certain clips.

Just wants a network that takes anime seriously for once... CN you're totally out of the running >.>

RE: Dubs vs Subs

Thats my point. Its the people that are the problem, and the people who have brought Anime that DONT SUCK and Arn't censored and ruined by translations and have good dubs are getting the shit end of the stick.

Elfen Lied had a good dub, thats a good example. It's Society's generalization of Anime as "Animated Cartoons" and not "Japanese Animation" that ruins it.

Robert's Anime Cornerstore has very good income.

YTV Takes anime sort of seriously, but you have to buy it to get the right feel. I don't watch anime on TV and I don't ever plan to.

Cheesecake Wrote:Actually, piracy killed it. They had plenty of income until people started pirating.

Only reason the Japanese industry isnt dieing is because they don't need to buy it from anyone. American anime industry buys the license from Japan.. and it flops because of piracy.

The Japanese industry doesn't need to buy it but they do need to sell it. A majority of the profits for the Japanese industry comes from licenses. When the American industry dies the Japanese industry is going to suffer. We're not going to lose out on titles which are known to make money. It's the lesser known titles that aren't going to be made because nobody wants to fund that risk.

They lose out in the addition of profit, but not the reduction of budget. Icon_smile That's what I mean. American industry loses out because they need to buy, Japanese indistry loses out because they can't sell to this market anymore. They still have Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Indian, German etc that they can sell licenses to.

RE: Dubs vs Subs

I have never been a big fan of dubs but can appreciate some done well but usually the ones done well and are uncensored with all the other good stuff, seem to be the most underground anime ever >.>.

Well at least to english speaking fandoms of anime. For example, I remember read or die on G4 like 4 years ago I think, which was done fairly well dubbed in my opinion but was removed with a whole other line up of anime due to low ratings. So I have to say its most likely the industry is doing something wrong in its marketing/other important industry like things. Seriously have you been to best buy recently the anime dvd section is ridiculously overpriced. Most of which are poorly dubbed and rarely offers a subtitle option.

So if the anime industry in america is dieing we can't just blame piracy, we also have to take into consideration the fact that its being run by a phenomenal pack of retards.

RE: Dubs vs Subs

I prefer dubs when I am playing a game or doing something that requires my eyesight to be elsewhere. I don't really like reading subtitles because sometimes I read too slow for the scene.
