RE: Main Channel

Public =/= Best is the point. But Public isn't meant to be the best. It's meant to do a job and do it cheaply/efficiently/conveniently.

Imagine two public bathrooms if you will. In one you can do whatever you want up to an extent. This is much like @main in it's current state. You can basically do whatever you want. Sure, you can yell to your buddy in the next stall. It may be a bit strange but you can if you want. There are however, some things you just don't do on @main. Just like there are some things you just don't do in a bathroom. You don't swear like a sailor every other sentence on @main and you don't go around defacing bathrooms just because you can. There are occasional exceptions but they not the norm.

Now imagine @main where you are not allowed to talk about any subject which comes to mind. You have to keep everything g-rated and polite because someone outside of the target audience might stumble upon it. That is like a bathroom which requires you to clean up the sections of floor that you step on every time you use it. If you want to talk in the bathroom you have to write it out and slip it under the stall door to your buddy. You have to clean the sinks after you use them too. Someone might have to see that dirt you washed off of your hands from working construction.

Just in case someone doesn't get it... Here is a little key to this analogy:
Yelling to your buddy = using @main to talk to a friend
Being forced to write to your buddy = forced to use PM system to talk 1 on 1.
Cleaning the floor you use = keeping the bathroom/@main g-rated and mother approved. (lol kix..)
Washing dirt from your hands from construction job = the fact that some people are more tolerant of harsh language or colorful word choices. Construction is a contrast to say.. a desk job. The point here is that the construction worker deals with dirt all day long. Someone working a desk job only has to deal with dirt when it's in the public bathroom sink. I think the desk job worker can learn to deal with that minor discomfort. Or if they care that much they can use a different bathroom(form of RO conversation).

RE: Main Channel

Can you make a valid point please? I am getting bored of reading walls of text that make no sense at all.

Being a "public chat" it ignores any rules and guidelines? This @Main feature is a GM channel in the first place, only they can see and access it by default. It is a bonus, pretty much like the warper, fishing, mining...etc. All Pandora is saying, watch how you use it, before you lose it.

I don't get how the server's rules don't apply there. I really don't get why can't people from the same guild use guild chat instead to talk about personal things. And what's even worse, is when 2 people talk directly to each other, using @main, even though they could use PM. And when someone actually contributes with an input to those 2, they tell him/her to shut up and not "interfere" in their conversation.

I turn @main off most of the time, but when I have to switch back and fourth between my account's chars, it gets really dumb turning main off over and over just because 2 idiots think @main is their play ground and they can talk about [Insert dumb chat topic here].

@main is a great feature, you can find sweet deals and find out who is buying/selling/trading what. It is the only reason I keep it open sometimes. But I lose the option of being in the market because of the reason I stated above?

I've been thinking of proposing the same thing Salvosa did a long time ago. All chat channels turned off by default, and you have to manually turn them on. Having 2 channels will solve everything, a @main and a @shop channel. Put guidelines and rules on what to do and what to not do there, and everyone will be happy.

That was probably the worst analogy ever, but I get your point at least.

Unfortuately, your point didn't really make any sense either.

A much better analogy would have been going outside and just screaming random profanities/whatever you want through a megaphone to your friend clear across the block. Also, the only way for your neighbors to block out your senseless ramblings is to put on earmuffs, so that they can't even hear the people they want to hear. Does this sound like a good idea?

It is a convenience that you are even allowed to use main chat, so the least you can do is keep your random conversations not totally offensive.

If you really want to use the bathroom reference, though, then what Panda is asking is much less like washing the floors and more like asking the employees to wash their hands after using the bathrooms.

Edit: Thanks alot Bloody for posting faster than me. Cry

RE: Main Channel

I would just like to say that I agree with what Panda has said, Every word. Most of the time Main is off because people just abuse it for no real reason, like when people use main to talk to others sitting next to them, seriously, that's just dumb. Also people posting random things that have no relevance to anything just because they think it's funny, it's not btw. Main is supposed to be for things like trade, finding parties, finding guilds, things of that sort, not for spamming or talking to friends, there is a PM system, USE IT!
And Kadar.....your analogy makes sense, sorta, but wouldn't you rather be in a nice clean bathroom instead of a crappy one with pee, trash, and whatever else people can find everywhere?
In my opinion people need to follow rules, because if they didn't there would be nothing, not computers, not money, not airplanes, not cars, not TV, NOTHING.
Besides, would you want your children playing a game and suddenly start screaming profanities and humping random people? Sounds far fetched, but it's really not.

RE: Main Channel

I feel like main isn't just for finding people in game, or trading or partying or to look for guilds. It is also to have fun occasionally, if someone wants to post one random comment we should all laugh at it and go on our merry little way, as long as said random comment isn't really breaking the rules, and they aren't spamming it why should we care?

We can easily ignore one line of writing occasinonally. And also at late night not many people are on in game to talk to, Main chat is fun to talk in then about all the crazy things going on in the world outside of RO. We should be able to use Main chat to get to know our fellow players better in a more broad sense than PMing if I can make sense with this at all.

I feel having funny talks in Main sometimes really lightens up the mood and makes us all enjoy playing the game for more than just grinding up to that next level. I play RO for more than to grind all day.

RE: Main Channel

well, firstly while i am used to those profanity and rape jokes now due to the nature of my study (i.e. male/female ratio is 99: 1), it is by no means funny. it might be to guys but if you are going to do them, please keep it amongst yourselves and have some consideration (if you haven't noticed) for the opposite gender counterpart of your species. as it might be a huge surprise to some of you, we do exist on the internet too (god that was one of the older jokes about internet and women)Icon_twisted

for me main is a very useful tool and should not be just removed or switched off just because of a few people who cannot keep their misdemeanor to themselves. it becomes frustrating when people does these kinds of things repetitively and often in excess, but main chat i think allow everyone to get to know people by the often occurring small talks with the whole server which are quite resourceful. it helps the community to bond better and also share information in regards to items, skills, locations, comic relief (occasionally) and events and more.

but i think that for some people the freedom of speech is a bit too much for them to handle. freedom of speech is not a right, it is a privilege given that you do not abuse it to wreak havoc or hurt people. verbal abuse, sexist or high level of chauvinistic comments and obscene profanity is a crime of assault by the way, and most places including public places will have you thrown out if you do such things as rape jokes and other inappropriate whatnots.

i think such things simply deserves jail time or mute, we don't have to cater for people who abuse the system through the loopholes because no matter how well you patch it up by the book, there will be holes in it.

for those who aren't the ones doing it, i think a screen shot and report is enough. though it will be up to the GM to judge as this actually may be abused due to circumstantial law/ rules/ etc.

for those doing it, just seriously stop it, it is not funny and it is actually very sad that you even think they are funny.

note: that was too long but i think that is everything.
Edit: colored it in for ease of reading. i noticed it is hard to read after i posted it.

When someone calls you a lunatic and the first thing that came to mind is a cute, fluffy, white bunny, you know you've played too much RO.

Welcome to our world.
