Dunno about everyone else, but I grew up with curse words being associated with the things I didn't like. Varies from person to person, I guess.

Randomly materializing within heRO since 2008.

Hi, I copy and paste profound and meaningful quotes without having an iota's worth of what it actually means!

RE: Curse Words ;o

I don't care one way or another about this rule, but I don't particularly like swear words for an entirely different reason.

teOx Wrote:words are words and imo only the meaning and intent behind them matter. swear words are useful in conveyance of tone and context just as things like punctuation, grammar, and caps.

First problem: words are not just words.??They're more powerful than almost any other way of expressing anything.??Language is a tool that can be incredibly helpful or hurtful depending on how it's used.

Second problem: swear words might be "useful" in conveying tone simply because they make it easier.??But they also destroy people's creativity with language if overused.??It's offensive to me, as someone who enjoys linguistics.??

So I dislike excessive swearing because there are far more creative ways to be offensive if you really want to be, and far more interesting ways to be "extreme," not because they "hurt my feelings" or offend me.??

More on the topic, though, eventually the current "swear" words (some of them) will be just as inoffensive as "Bloody" (british word, not the player) is considered today. My opinion.

RE: Curse Words ;o

if youre offended by that, shouldnt you be offended by all the people who cant spell? there are plenty of ways that the english language gets retarded, do they all offend you?

your first and second "problems" combined seem to imply to me that you dont think there is anything particularly wrong with "swear" words.

and you dislike swearing because you think it lacks originality? there is no need for originality when your goal is to make someone feel bad. though i suppose it could be a nice change.

all your points lead to getting rid of swearing rules and allowing free speech. sadly the rules are made subjectively by whoever is in charge based on his/her vision of how the community should be, however stupid the reason.

Why not put up a vote for the COMMUNITY to decide whether they want it around or not? =x

RE: Curse Words ;o

teOx, your entire response to my post seems to imply that you didn't read the first line of my post:

azurerogue Wrote:I don't care one way or another about this rule, but I don't particularly like swear words for an entirely different reason.

But, since you already responded, I'll answer your questions.??

teOx Wrote:shouldnt you be offended by all the people who cant spell? there are plenty of ways that the english language gets retarded, do they all offend you?

A lot of them do, actually.??Spelling is generally one.??I get over most of it though, because as a general rule the language is representative of those who speak it.??Languages evolve based on the people who speak it.??American English (all English, but more so American English in the last century) has seen a fairly rapid series of changes that often make it seem "stupider."??I wish there was more to it than that.??So, yes, it bothers me that our language is repeatedly degraded by the people who speak it the most, but it's what is happening and as it becomes more common the language will adapt to accomodate it.??

teOx Wrote:your first and second "problems" combined seem to imply to me that you dont think there is anything particularly wrong with "swear" words.

You are correct, sir.??My "problems" were simply problems with your argument, not with swear words in general.??My problem with swear words was stated below that.??

teOx Wrote:and you dislike swearing because you think it lacks originality?

Indeed.

teOx Wrote:all your points lead to getting rid of swearing rules and allowing free speech.

You say that in a manner that makes me think you're trying to prove me wrong somehow - I never said we should have swearing rules.??I said I didn't care about the rules but that I, personally, don't like swearing for a completely unrelated reason.??

So yes, to state it openly, I would be fine with eliminating the no swearing thing (and it would make being a Main moderator way less obnoxious).??At the same time, I like the rule because I find swearing obnoxious, just like I find people who have a need to swear in every sentence obnoxious and tiresome.??That's seriously not meant to offend anyone in particular, I just think the overuse of curse words gets annoying.??If you throw one in here and there, I can live with it (and even appreciate it, at times).??

EDIT: Sorry for the overly in-depth response. Work is ridiculously slow today.

Absolutly.??But wiping them totaly from the vocabulary is as anoying.??Plus, its hypocrisy (from the media and everywhere on the internetz where it is like that).??Can't say the f-word, but can say wtf as long as it is abreviated.??Just non-sense.??
